It’s a virus that causes respiratory infections and these can range from the common cold to more serious diseases.
Coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China and they named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) – ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for the virus, and ‘D’ for the disease. But now the “coronavirus” is often prefaced with the word “novel,” Novel coronavirus is named SARS-CoV-2 which stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2, this is because the virus is very similar to the SARS coronavirus that was first discovered in 2003.
It is important to know the symptoms to combat this disease. with coronavirus may experience symptoms such as:
- Cough
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath.
COVID-19 range from a mild illness like kidney failure, pneumonia, and even severe acute respiratory syndrome. So if it’s not treated on time this disease can even prove fatal.
Other major symptoms of COVID-19 can include a runny nose, acute blocked nose (congestion), headache, muscle or joint pains, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of sense of smell, altered sense of taste, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
How It Spreads?
It can spread from person to person through:
- Close contact with an infectious person.
- Contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze.
- Touching objects or surfaces that have droplets from an infected person, and then touching your mouth or face.
Precautions You Can Take To Avoid The Risk Of Infection
Though COVID-19 is a deadly disease, by maintaining proper precautions you can stay safe. So here are four precautions you can take to avoid infection:
- Wash your hands frequently using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Try to cover your mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissue immediately.
- Avoid close contact with people who has cold or flu-like symptoms.
- It’s important to seek medical care early if you or your child has a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
Best Way To Wash Hands Properly
- Wet hands with running water.
- Apply enough soap to cover wet hands.
- Scrub all surfaces of the hands, including the back of hands, between fingers, and under nails, for at least 20 seconds.
- Rinse thoroughly with running water.
- Dry your hands with a clean cloth or single-use towel.
Also, make sure to wash your hands often, especially before eating; after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; and going to the bathroom.
If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Who’s at the highest risk?
The people most at risk of catching the virus are:
- A traveler who have recently been overseas
- People who have close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
- People in correctional and detention facilities.
- People who have certain chronic conditions.
- Those who are the age 70 years and older.
- People who have certain conditions which compromise their immune systems.
COVID-19 and Breastfeeding
There is no evidence breastmilk carries COVID-19, so the women were encouraged to continue breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But your doctor may recommend some further precautions, also it is recommended to avoid close contact with people who are unwell and follow hand and cough hygiene advice.
