New Genes Discovered To Regulate The Level Of Unhealthy Fatty Substances In The Liver

In the western and all over the world, the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD, is one of the most frequent liver diseases. A study says that one in every three Norwegians could possess a fatty liver variant. And surprisingly that is not produced by alcohol abuse. This particular disease is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD. This is considered the most typical liver disease in the Western world.

This disease is identified with particulate of the building of fat in the liver. Some people in the studies also showed fat accumulation that may lead to inflammation and liver damage. These medical terms are marked damage as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Without proper diagnosis, with time, these diseases can lead to cirrhosis or cancer over a period that can prove fatal for the patient. The research also showed a concern that by 2030 all Americans will develop NAFLD.

Within the research, it is not yet clear which factors cause a build-up of fat in the liver to serious damage. But again the study showed that a person’s gene can be a piece of good evidence for the research. Another objective showed that certain lipids that are not stocked perfectly can guide to liver damage.

The previously done studies basically focused on the entire level of fat in the liver. Scientists tey do not know if these fats and lipids are the reason that can do this serious damage to the liver. Lipids are the collaboration of different fatty substances. Genes are important in many ways to control one’s physical health. It can be important in controlling the number of fatty substances in the liver.

This can lead to an important matter in the development of fatty liver disease and liver damage. Frode Norheim, newly appointed associate professor at the Institute of Basic Medical Studies has led the study with other teams. The other collaboration of this study was between Norheim and researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This extensive research was later published in the journal Molecular Systems Biology.

Researchers tried to determine the fatty substances that were most harmful to the liver. Among many other factors, damage occurred in the patients who already had some other issues in their immune system. This can be a result of insulin obstruction and inflammation happening in the liver.

“We examined several hundred fatty substances in the livers of hundreds of different strains of mice. This part of the research took place over three years at UCLA,” Norheim explained to the journal with his experience of works. He added further that one particular gene showed that it already stored factors of obesity and the storage of fat, known as triglycerides. The tests were done in mice. And this gene is called Map2k6.

They hope that this research may contribute to better medication for obesity in the future and can regulate the level of harmful fatty substances. Any medicine effective between two genes can do this work with efficiency.
